Got to see a short performance of the NC Opera this past Friday at the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh. Its kind of amazing how they drown out the dj and expensive loud speakers.

It’s no surprise I’m a big Harry Potter fan. It started years ago when I bought book 5 on audio book. I was interning at the Concord Monitor and driving an hour or two a day for assignments. Quickly I got sucked in. Eating lunch in the car to listen, driving the slow way to everything on my day off. I bought the rest of the books one after the other. Spent about two years only listening to Harry Potter in the car. Was better than all those NPR reports of war around the world. It was a magical escape. I stared seeing wizards in disguise everywhere.
When the seventh book came out, we’ll I couldn’t wait as well as everyone else. But my dad planned our second trip to Ukraine the day before the book was released. I was devastated. You know, as devastated as a boy boarding a flight to Ukraine could be. All I could think was: “if our flight left 3 hours later I could buy the book.” I could see pallets of books carting around JFK before my 9pm flight. Three hours…
Since then I’ve forced the books on to friends and relatives. Entered trivia contests. Went to midnight showings of movies 5,6,7.1, and 7.2. And best of all, visited Hogwarts and Hogsmeade in Orlando last year.
I’m headed back down is weekend and just as excited as last time. These are some photos from the last trip.
Twenty twelve was a long interesting year. I went to about 30 ballets. Had 8 photo shows. Shot NYC fashion week. Became an uncle for the second time. Went to Harry Potter land. Shot 50,000+ photos. **Correction** 78,000+ photos. Searched for myself. Smiled at least 27 times.
I’d say it was good. Here are my favorites, not quite my best but favorite to me in some sentimental awesome way.
Polls! Polls! Polls!!!
For weeks I would wake up and listen to NPR. Listen to the “campaign trail”. Hear the newest results of the latest poll.
Check FiveThirtyEight. Refresh. Refresh. Ok once more.
Stress out. Drink coffee. Then start working.
Was a great morning routine. And now it’s gone, overnight. Literally overnight. It was like Christmas but with much more anxiety and the presents can’t be opened until 10pm or later. I was waiting for this day for so long and preparing and hoping. Hoping Nate Silver was right (he was).
It was over in a flash. I’m guessing you know the plot.
I asked my writer ( Ben McNeely ) to scribble on napkins all day documenting whatever was important. Whatever he thought. It started at Mecca around lunchtime. It ended around 2am with just enough time for last call.

Election 2012: Where to? What next?
Pick one up while you’re at it and remember the longest shortest day this year.
Tried out something new this past weekend and shot an entire night of double exposures. Tow3rs headlined Kings and brought their fun music back to Raleigh, I guess I was inspired to shoot something interesting. Spending most of this year building digital photo collages, real time double exposures seemed to come a little more natural than I thought. Felt weird today when I imported the photos, all 45 of them. Most of my other shoots have hundreds if not thousands in their folder but this shoot provided some of my favorite music related photos all year.
I’ve always been intrigued with painting, with creating something new where every element has meaning and is deliberate. This series titled ‘Hallucinations’ I made little while back is one of my first real attempts at that idea. All of these photos were made from blending archive photos on my iPhone with applications like Filterstorm, Magic Hour, Sketchbook Mobile and Photoshop Touch.
